Cam Levins Announces Return to Toronto Waterfront Marathon

By Adam Kopet

Cam Levins announced Monday that he will compete at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Oct. 20, which also serves as the Canadian Marathon Championships and the Canadian Olympic Trials Marathon.

Levins made his marathon debut at the 2018 edition of the race. He finished fourth overall in a Canadian record 2:09:25. The previous record of 2:10:09 belonged to Jerome Drayton from the 1975 Fukuoka Marathon.

For Levins to guarantee his spot on the Canadian team in Tokyo next year, he will need to run under 2:11:30, which he did in his debut on the same course. The Toronto Waterfront Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label race, which means a top-five finish will also give Levins the standard.

Levins had been scheduled to race the London Marathon this past spring, but he withdrew from the race in the weeks leading up to the race. His only race so far in 2019 was an 18th place finish at the United Airlines NYC Half in 1:05:10. His half marathon personal best is 1:02:15 from the 2018 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.

It has been a rough few years for Levins as he has dealt with injuries. He represented Canada in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the 2012 Olympics and set various Canadian records in his early years as a pro. He missed the 2016 Olympics and has since shifted his attention to the roads.

Athletics Canada announced the Toronto Waterfront Marathon will continue to host the Canadian Marathon Championships through 2022, lengthening the partnership with Canada Running Series, of which, the Toronto Waterfront Marathon is a part.
